‘Become a better landlord’: Central Land Council concerned over NT Gov’s proposed housing reforms

NT Housing Minister and local member for the Barkly, Steve Edginton, last week announced plans for extensive public housing reforms that would strengthen the government’s ability to recoup rental arrears while also simplifying the process to evict tenants. In the days since the announcement, human rights groups, accessible housing advocates and Aboriginal representative bodies including the Central Land Council, have decried the move, claiming it disproportionately, impacts Aboriginal tenants and stands to increase homelessness and crime. Chair of the Central Land Council, Mr Warren Williams, joins us on the Big Brekky Program to unpack the Government’s announcements and discuss the many concerns they have over it.
