On the back of the National Survey – due tomorrow – to assess the current state of play in our creative industries, 8CCC thought it was apt to feature singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Sally Seltmann‘s album Art School Reverie – her love letter to creativity.

Remember art college? What’s changed? Sally went through the College of Fine Arts (COFA) in Sydney in the 90s and has taken an interesting and award-winning trail since. Her co-writing of the transformative hit for Feist, 1234, spun Sally into the spotlight, thanks to the iPod Nano ad.

“I have a very clear memory of having finished art school and moving to Melbourne and I had this little exhibition in a clothing store. I was proud of it, and it was good, and after the opening night I just thought I think I’m better at music. And that was the clear cut: I stopped exhibiting and I just focused on music.” Bernard Zuel interview

Her previous albums include ‘Heart That’s Pounding’ and ‘Early Moon’. Sally previously performed under the name New Buffalo and is a member of Seeker Lover Keeper with Sarah Blasko and Holly Throsby.

Sally’s music has featured in international films and TV shows, and with her husband Darren Seltmann composed the score for the critically acclaimed TV show The Letdown in 2017. Following on from this they won Best Song for The Screen at the Screen Music Awards for their song ‘Dancing in The Darkness.’

2018 saw her command some other aspects of her creativity when she published her debut novel Lovesome, set in her art heyday with an artist/waitress protagonist, and showcased at a variety of Writers Festivals. She was diagnosed with Bipolar later in life and speaks openly about the challenges this has added.

Listen to the beautiful sound of Art School Reverie and relive those golden years or be inspired to launch yourself into the art world!
