Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers formed July 2015 when all five original members – singer Anna Ryan, guitarist Scarlett McKahey, drummer Neve van Boxsel, keyboardist Pip Gazard, and bassist Jaida Stephenson – were 15 year-old students at a Steiner school in Canberra, with some members from Melbourne and Wollongong. Pip Gazard left in 2018. Their 2022 EP Pretty Good For A Girl Band came out in 2022, to much acclaim, and their 2023 debut I Love You hit #6 on the ARIA chart. The album of the same name, won an AIR Award for Best Independent Rock Album and made history as the first non-male band to win ARIA’s Breakthrough Artist award. They opened for Pearl Jam at part of the Dark Matter tour in May 2025.
Reviews have been turning up from all over: Beat mag, Noise 11, Emma Kershaw wrote for Forbes “Produced by three-times GRAMMY Award-winner Catherine Marks and mixed by three-times GRAMMY Award-winner Oli Jacobs, the album was recorded in the band’s studio in New South Wales over the course of five weeks. The result? An energetic record that is an exploration of confidence, disgust, infatuation and power.” Cameron Menegoni writes on Amrap’s Music is Bloody Great, “Best band name going. They’ve got the hooks, the fury and probably a bigger future than the rest of us.”
Check them out on streaming platforms, Bandcamp and if you’re lucky, a venue near you…
