Curator of the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens, Sam Hussey, chats to the Big Brekky about an event the Gardens will host on May 25th; the 'Alice Springs Longest Desert Lunch. This event is the major annual fundraiser for the Hamilton Downs Youth Camp, a not-for-profit community organisation that provides a bush destination for youth outdoor education activities. The funds will assist with upgrading facilities.

Thanks to a dedicated group of enthusiastic volunteers, weekly youth athletic meets have returned to the Barkly Region. Over the weekend, the Tennant Creek Athletics Committee ran their first 'come try' day, which saw over 40 young people try their hands (and feet) at throwing, jumping and running, while the toddlers' 'Tiny Tots' program ran a range of fun, movement-based learning activities. Committee Member Matt Blankenspoor joined The Big Brekky Show from the Tennant Creek studio to tell us more. The program continues every Thursday afternoon at the Tennant Creek Primary School from 5pm.

Oliver Tuan, teacher at Yipirinya School, and teacher's aid Dennis Goodie, join The Big Brekky to chat about an esport program they have started at the Yipirinya School shopfront, 62 Todd Mall.The gaming program is currently running a Tekken Tournament, with finals this Saturday and cash prizes to be run. Oliver talks of the links that gaming and esports have with oral literacy, hand-eye coordination, strategy, and problem solving. The program provides youth with a feed, air conditioning, and a safe and supervised environment. There is the hope that transport opportunities will be developed in the near future.

Chris Tomlinson – Healing & Truth Telling Circle

Chris Tomlinson joins The Big Brekky to talk about a Healing & Truth Telling Circle, happening on the Uniting Church lawns from 5pm on February 19th, 20th and 21st. The Circle aims to give a safe space, with no police presence, for First Nations youth to tell their truths, for communities to voice their issues, and to find a way to work together. Chris flags two main issues indigenous communities are facing to be fracking and cultural genocide through youth incarceration. Judy Atkinson, a Jiman/ Bundjalung women and national leader in intergenerational and relational trauma, will assist. "It's the truth telling that does the healing," Chris says.
