community garden plotThis Sunday 17th March the Alice Springs Community Garden is holding its first Open Day for the year and all community members are invited. The garden will be open between 10am-2pm with workshops, garden tours, music and pizza from the Cob BBQ Oven for lunch.

The Community Garden is a located in Frances Smith Memorial Park in Eastside, and is a volunteer run initiative. After dedicated work by community members and the Arid Lands Environment Centre the lease for the garden was secured in late 2010, with support from the Alice Springs Town Council, Power Water Corporation and the Ian Potter Foundation. Since that time the garden has flourished.

The community garden is an educational space that is designed to provide opportunities for individuals, groups and organisations to share and learn together everything from arid zone gardening techniques, to award winning Rosella jam recipes. Various workshops run at the garden over the year, there are community garden plots, a bushfoods and mandala garden, the Cob BBQ Oven and many community gatherings.

“It’s just been amazing to see community spirit at work in making this garden happen,” said Jimmy Cocking from the Arid Lands Environment Centre. “So much energy has gone it to creating this garden, and you can now see the results three years later. It’s full of life, and a great space to hang out in.”

So many people have attended workshops on topics from composting, building recycled furniture, garden water efficiency and arid zone gardening techniques. This aspect will continue this year, and we are urging anyone who may be interested to come and say hello this weekend,” Jimmy Cocking said.

Community members are invited to Frances Smith Memorial Park at 10am to meet some of the plot holders, garden committee members, and volunteers. BBQ lunch kicks off at 12pm. For more information ph 89522497.
