In the lead up to his much anticipated second album in October, 8CCC are featuring Baker Boy‘s 2021 debut album Gela. The album was well received and his awards included Album of the Year, Best Solo Artist, and Best Hip Hop Release at the 2022 ARIA Music Awards.
Working across rap, dance, acting and graffiti, Danzal Baker from Milingimbi and Maningrida, otherwise known as Baker Boy, is a multi-talented, multi-lingual, Indigenous artist and was recipient of the 2019 Young Australian of the Year, the first Indigenous artist to achieve mainstream success rapping in the Yolngu Matha language. In 2021 even before releasing Gela, he was awarded the Order of Australia, commenting on the day (26 January): “(I) look forward to being able to share and celebrate it, but I do not wish to comment any further at this stage as I am in mourning for Invasion Day…I have spent the day peacefully marching the streets of Narrm (Melbourne) and look forward to a time where we celebrate our country, our people and their achievements on a different day out of respect for all of my First Nations brothers and sisters.” (Music Feeds)
