Javier
“I was born in Bogota, Columbia. I always wanted to combine architecture and nature, so we sold everything and came to Australia to study … then I got the opportunity to come here. As a traveller of the world, you develop a resilience …. and need to enjoy the differences, wherever you are.
Alice Springs is a unique small town, with people who come from many places, away from their families. So your friends become your family.”
Anna
Anna was born in Krakow, Poland and came to Australia as a political refugee. For the first few years I lived in Sydney and then came to Alice Springs with her husband for work. “I found myself in small town in the middle of nowhere ….”

Cuthbert
“I was born in a small African country called Zimbabwe. Having a young family and wanting the best for my family I chose to migrate to Australia. Many things are similar to my home, here in Alice. I like the multiculturalism, learning about the local culture and local people, but it is hard to be away from my extended family. I now feel more integrated (after 3 years) and a little Aussie Oy Oy Oy!”
Liese
Liese was born in England, and moved to Australia when she was 6 weeks old. She came to Alice Springs for work, and has stayed much longer than she thought she would.
Yordanka
Yordanka is from Cuba, a regular broadcaster on 8CCC who came to Alice Springs for love.
Said Michael
“I was born in Cairo, Egypt and migrated to Australia in the late sixties with my family … Alice Springs gave us the opportunity to start afresh (after we had lost everything working overseas in a war zone) … We have found we can really contribute to the life here in Alice Springs.”
Lorraine
“I was born in Alice Springs and have lived here all my life. I can’t think of living anywhere else. We would often go off down the Todd River, picnicking …. I learned to swim in a muddy waterhole in the Todd River after the river had run …”
Alex
“I was born in Cape Town South Africa, but I have lived in Australia for about half of my life now. I came up with my partner a few times. We got sucked into some of the creative projects in Alice Springs, and decided to stay.
Its a beautiful place and you never know what you’ll be doing from one week to the next, and there is a great mix of people here.”
Leah
Leah moved to Alice Springs with her Australian husband. “I love the size of the town. You can bike everywhere … I love hiking up Mt Gillen … its a very active town. Getting used to the heat is the biggest thing for me.”
