Helen rugged up in the Russian Winter

In planning today’s yarn I was reminded of an old joke – what is black and white and red all over? A newspaper.  Newspapers have been central in the life of Helen Womack.  And the colours in the joke are significant too, in the journey from Helen’s childhood in the coalfields of Yorkshire in England, to the snow and ice of many winters in Russia and later to the red sands of Central Australia.

In this yarn, Helen talks of her life as a journalist in Russia from the 1980s to the present, the changes she has observed and lived through since the end of the Soviet Union. She also draws some unexpected parallels between Australia and the new Russia.

Broadcast: Tuesday 3 September 2013 at 5.30pm on 8CCC Community Radio 102.1FM

and streaming live on on the world wide web!
