The Big Brekky Program was joined by Sid Vashist, Mayor of the Barkly Regional Council, in our Tennant Creek studio to talk about a significant issue currently being discussed at the Northern Territory Government level — the possible de-amalgamation of regional councils, including the Barkly Regional Council.

The idea of breaking larger councils back into smaller local governments is being explored, and it could have major implications for service delivery, governance, and community representation in remote regions.

Mayor Vashist shares the Barkly Regional Council’s perspective and provides some insight into what he believes this could mean for the region.

The Northern Territory Government has released three discussion papers on legislative amendments to the Local Governments Act 2019 and is inviting community discussion on them via an online survey or in person at their public consultation sessions in Tennant Creek on Wednesday, 28 May at Thomas House, 172 Paterson St from 2pm and in Alice Springs at the Red Sands Alice Plaza on May 26 (3pm), 29 (3pm and 30 (10am & 2pm).
